Oxygen cursors, another time, another try

Posted by ruphy at 19:32 on the 23 of November, 2007 — Categories: KDE, Oxygen.

UPDATE:
I just want to remember to all the commenters that, because the cursors are SVG, keeping the design all the colors can be changed in seconds, with awesome results, and this operation is also automated by the fanthastic perl script done by David Faure just for me. :D
I will ship for sure a yellow theme other than the white one, for accessibility (Olaf made me promise this at aKademy) and maybe also a dark one, for similar purposes. I will make all the other colors (plus nice combinations of them) available on my homepage (currently under maintainance), maybe also some variants to the theme. =)

Hello,

this is a very quick post to show the further improvements I’ve achieved on the Oxygen cursor theme.

Here’s the new look of some cursors: (please take some time to look at them, you will appreciate the subtle design much more…)

Left pointerHand Cursor for contextual help
Lovely, aren’t them?
Maybe the hand is a little bit too fat, but nothing much.
The clock is coming too, I think I had a pretty good idea for it, just need to draw it now (guys, it’s 40 frames… :\)

If you want to track the developement as it happens, or help me testing the theme, please git clone git://people.freedesktop.org/~ruphy/oxy-cursors.git (“fattish” branch is atm the most updated).
Note that this is still unreleased and might be subject to heavy changes before there is a release. I don’t want to give support on that, I will only when I will have reached a more mature point in the set (and therefore I will have merged the theme in the KDE SVN). Still there is a README file in there, and very useful scripts. ;-)

And yes, pointers for lefthanded will be provided as well.

See you in next post!

Looks good! You’re right, the hand is too fat.

  2. Comment by gfdsa — November 23, 2007 @ 8:05 pm

the hand is not too fat, the finger is too short ;)

  3. Comment by Louis — November 23, 2007 @ 8:11 pm

Agree with gfdsa, the finger seems short by a few pixels. I think the short finger gives the illusion that the hand is fat.

    I liked it.

The arrow looks similar to this:

    http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=27913

Which happens to be my cursor theme of choice :-)

    Keep the arrow fat, please!

    “peoBle”?

Great!! I like them very much. Congratulations Riccardo!

About the hand try to move the closed fingers a little bit down and then it should be perfect IMHO

    @pinotree:
    Ahem… thanks for reporting! ^^

    Looks great!!

  9. Comment by Konj — November 23, 2007 @ 9:05 pm

They are nice as graphic objects but not enough sharp to be mouse pointers.
As a default cursor theme I think we (still) need more standard arrows.

Looks nice, will it be for 4.0.0??

    Bravo !

    Very nice!

  13. Comment by FiNeX — November 23, 2007 @ 9:35 pm

Eggià, la manina è un po’ troppo cicciotta… per il resto ottimi direi :-)

  14. Comment by shamaz — November 23, 2007 @ 9:50 pm

It’s really perfect ! :O (well, the hand may be improved)

@Konj : these cursors *are* sharp. Exactly as sharp as the default Windows cursor (I have checked). So I think it’s standard enougth:)

    Looks good! :)

    Ottimo lavoro! :)

Comunque più che l’indice troppo corto direi che le dita chiuse sono troppo lunghe. Secondo me se abbassi un po’ quelle viene fuori una mano molto carina! ^^

Can I make a suggestion for those of us who can’t see well? Would it be possible to include a set that is 2x larger than what you have?

  18. Comment by T1m — November 24, 2007 @ 1:51 am

At a first look I didn’t really like them, but then maybe they don’t really match your blog! With that thought in mind, they do seem to look nicer.
    Cheers!

Personally, I would prefer that cursors don’t contain bright colors. The last two, especially the last one, looks alot like the cartoon art nature of KDE 3, which I thought oxygen was trying to move away from. At least make the graphics a little darker, they feel just a little two bright and offensive.

Regardless of whether you implement my suggestions or not, thank-you for all the time that you donate to open source. You are a blessing.

The courses that were posted a couple of days ago, I didn’t like them so much, but

    THESE ARE GREAT!!

    That are the real Oxygen-Coursers

Looks good. But the arrow base (at the bottom) and the finger should be longer ).

    I like this theme:
    http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/ComixCursors?content=32627
It looks somewhat like standart cursors, but is a lot nicer and smoother ).

  22. Comment by drizek — November 24, 2007 @ 4:08 am

Can you also make an inverted/black version?

I also agree that the blue and red on the last two should be toned down a bit. Also, the circle and the x on them should probably be a bit smaller and more discreet.

  23. Comment by Scott — November 24, 2007 @ 7:01 am

I think that the tail of the arrow should be bigger/have a smaller arrowhead as well. Unfortunately the general trend of cursors seems to be toward bigger arrowheads and shorter tails, so I may just have to make my own cursors to get them the way I want them. :(

I like the shading and colors though!

    Cool, gonna use those =)
    Some suggestions…

belli ! Magari la “i” del puntatore…”infrmativo” potrebbe essere lievemente più netta sul blu.

Poi, mi lancio, perchè invece dell’outline nero non provi con un sottile (2-3px) glow blu? chiassoso ? non fattibile ?

  26. Comment by petriceanu — November 24, 2007 @ 11:43 am

They are nice, but since these will be the default ones why don’t you try to make them a bit less toyish?

  27. Comment by Livio — November 24, 2007 @ 1:56 pm

To create png’s inkscape is used.
    ImageMagick could be used instead.

  28. Comment by AkumA — November 24, 2007 @ 3:04 pm

    Nice “hand”!
But I don’t like very much the arrow..
Maybe a little bit classic (sharp?).. or maybe something really new, like all the cool stuff proposed by Oxygen ;)

  29. Comment by 2dvisio — November 24, 2007 @ 3:18 pm

I was always critic about your previous works but now I have to admit you did a wonderful job!

The hand is very good. Even if I quote AkumA for the arrows… I’d like to see something completely new (not an arrow :) ).

    GREAT JOB!

    You can do better

    Ciao Riccardo,

I agree with Ari Caldeira, the main pointer looks a lot like the Polar cursor set, which I think is great; Polar is my chosen cursor set.

Good stuff! However I suggest that the blue and red colours should only be used as borders or highlights of the X and (I) symbols, so much colour appearing suddenly on a neutrally coloured cursor is somewhat jarring.

  35. Comment by Janet — July 23, 2008 @ 11:50 pm

Will there be additional cursors in a bigger size? They are really awesome – but a little small for higher display resolutions like 1920×1200.
