Oxygen Wallpapers Contest: first winner

Posted by ruphy at 9:04 on the 16 of November, 2007 — Categories: Oxygen, KDE 4.

Mesdames and Messieurs, time has come to finally unveil the winners of the contest! This is one, the first unveiled, of the winning wallpapers! We reached a number of 15 total winners!

I’m announcing you the first wallpaper which is winning the contest. This is not the big winner, but still. This picture is nothing really new, as I already put it as default background in plasma (starting from beta 3), but no-one really knew it was a winner one. ;-)

This is a thumbnail of the great picture, which has been taken from Kenneth Wimer!

First unveiled winner
Thanks a lot to Ken (ken at oxygen-icons.org) for having submitted this awsome pic. This was just a little preview. We’ll reveal the other winners tomorrow, the blog post is already ready, just give us the time to write up a dot article and I’ll suddenly click the “Publish” button! =)

    I like the picture, but it’s really not my style. I’m looking forward to seeing all the new ones!

    Just to correct your first words, in french it is: “Mesdames et Messieurs” :).
    - Monsieur (singular)
    - Messieurs (plural)

    BTW, very nice 1st wallpaper, can’t wait to see the next one :).

    This background makes a good contrast with the (mostly) colorless oxygen theme.

    I like the wallpaper. I’ve been using it time and again since it was published as an alternative Kubuntu wallpaper sometime in 2006.

    Looks quite ugly to be honest. That’s my 2c.

    Its a very nice photo but not really a good wallpaper in my opinion.

    @GCN:
    thanks, corrected.
    All of my french knowledge seems to have flied away. ;-)

    degustibus non disputandum est. :-)

    @Michael:

    I’m looking forward more abstract SVG wallpapers (without bubbles)…

    It’s a nice picture indeed - but just as a photograph, not as a default desktop background, IMO
    Personally i’d prefer something more neutral, i.e. just colours. Something like the PC-BSD desktop.
    Looking forward to see the other winners.

    The image in plasma is jagged and pretty low res. I hope the final one be of sufficient resolution that it doesn’t look so blocky on my 1600×1200 monitor…

    Also, I fully agree with the other poster that this pic is too full of saturated colors. My desktop is not a painting, I get to look at the pic most of my day (at least partially) so I’d like something that is not so upsetting to my eyes :)

    Indeed, looking forward to more!

    guys, you misunderstood… this is the first of the winners, but won’t be the default wallpaper. =)
    And, trust me, it’s subtle enough to make any kind of work, and works prefectly as a wallpaper… you can try with plasma if you want.

    ARRRG, for three day people saying “We releas the winners tomorrow.”
    Pleas guys, I don’t want to be rude but pleas come to an end! We are all curious about that.
    The picture that you posted today is certainly a nice picture but I think that it was a good decision that it didn’t make the first winner. It is too dark in the back to represent the Desktop. But even though thx to the artist to contribute with such a great picture.

    As more than one said, great picture but I really don’t like it as a wallpaper. I hope this will not be the default.

    Thanks.

    Yes nice picture, but where is the config file where you specify which wallpaper to use?

  16. Comment by Stefan — November 17, 2007 @ 12:20 pm

    I cannot find the wallpapers on the internet / kdelook.org

    Link anyone?

  17. Comment by ruphy — November 17, 2007 @ 2:42 pm

    Please don’t.
    As with icons, maybe even more, we would like to keep the wallpapers fresh for KDE 4.0. That’s also why I’ve only released a thumbnail. We just ask you to be patient for one month. =)

    Uhm…does anyone know in what config file you change the wallpaper in KDE(4)?
    There is a “Wallpaper=” somewhere but I can’t find the damn file anymore.

    Jürgen

    very nice!
    I’m impatient to see all the others!!!

    a request/question: will all the wallpapers of the contest (not only the winners) be published somewhere?

  20. Comment by ruphy — November 17, 2007 @ 6:05 pm

    @Jürgen Jydde:
    going by what I remember, I’m pretty sure it’s $KDEHOME/share/config/plasmarc

  21. Comment by Paul Leopardi — November 19, 2007 @ 2:07 am

    I submitted wallpapers to the contest. Does the fact that I haven’t been contacted mean that I am now free to release my wallpapers to (eg.) KDE-look? I am sick of waiting.
